COMMODORES UPDATE: CORRECTION TO 3RD OF JULY FIREWORKS SHOW AT WHITING PARK

 TO:    WRBC MEMBERS

Please be advised that I misunderstood Adi Cruz, City of Whiting, when she said that there would be a $10 Fee to enter the park to watch the fireworks show. This is actually a $10 Fee to park your vehicles at the Mascot Hall of Fame Parking Lot, located on 1851 Front Street in Whiting.  It will cost you $10 to park there if you decide to. That is the only area with a fee to park.

PARKING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED AT THE 117TH STREET WHITING PARK ENTRANCE. CITY PARKING WILL ONLY BE AT THE MASCOT HALL OF FAME PARKING LOT ON FRONT STREET. THE WHITING HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FIELD PARKING LOT ON 117TH STREET WILL BE LOCKED AND SO WILL THE GATES.

You still are allowed to walk in, ride your bikes, etc. to enter the park to watch the event at either entrance of the park.

No vehicles will be allowed into the Park after 6PM.

I apologize for the confusion.

I wish you all a safe and Happy 4th of July!!

TO:    WRBC MEMBERS

SUBJECT: 2022 PERCH DERBY

For all of you members who enjoy perch fillets, there is still plenty of time to sign up
and get involved with our Perch Derby that is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2022
at 6:00AM check in time.

You do not have to launch out of our marina at Whihala Beach, as it is fairly shallow.
You can launch from the Hammond Marina, as it is open to all members or any other
marina that you wish to launch from.

The fishing time is from 6:30AM to 1:30PM.
You must be back at the club, in line, by 2:00PM SHARP, NO EXCEPTIONS or
your fish will NOT be weighed in for the contest.

To be part of and enjoy this event, you do not have to sign in this year at the Boat Club,
you can simply call Mike Zavesky at (708) 259-9009.  Please let him know your name
and membership number, and in addition, all those who are competing on your vessel.

It takes a lot of time and effort to put these events together for our club.
Please let's get involved and make this a great turn out.

Thank you in advance and hope to see you there Saturday.

COMMODORES UPDATE: HARBOR - BUILDING & GROUNDS CLEAN-UP AND PERCH DERBY

TO:    BOAT CLUB MEMBERS

SUBJECTS:    HARBOR - BUILDING & GROUNDS CLEAN-UP AND PERCH DERBY
____________________________________________________________________________

RE:    THE HARBOR

I have received and observed many boats being able to utilize our harbor as is. In fact, last Saturday,
there was a 24 foot fully enclosed aluminum Alaskan boat that was able to launch and transverse our
harbor out into and back from the lake. This is very encouraging for at least most of us who have
smaller boats and want to utilize our harbor for the summer.

Again, a reminder, that the City of Whiting will dredge even deeper in September. So, we should be
good to go with no issues next Spring.

RE:    BUILDING AND GROUNDS CLEAN-UP SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 2022 AT 10AM

Again, this year like every year, we will be conducting a clean-up of our building inside and outside
on the grounds to keep it in good shape.  I am asking for volunteers at this time to join us in this
clean-up effort.  We will be mopping floors, cleaning windows, dusting, and anything else that needs
to be addressed both inside and outside of the building.

We will also be scrubbing down our picnic tables with deck wash and at a later date will seal them
again to preserve them for as long as we can.

I would like to thank you in advance for anyone who is willing to help.  When we are finished, there
will be food and drink provided.  The date for this is Saturday, June 11, 2022 starting at 10AM.
Hope to see you there.

RE:    PERCH DERBY ON JUNE 25, 2022 AT 6AM  ---   (RAIN DATE JULY 9, 2022)

I have been informed by Mike Zavesky who runs our derby's that he has received no applications
for this derby. You still have time to get into this derby and as earlier stated, our harbor is usable.
Please let's make this as in past years a great outing.

If you feel you don't trust launching from our harbor, we still have the OK to launch from Hammond
Marina FREE OF CHARGE.  Make sure you have your Membership Card with you if you intend to
launch from there.

We need good involvement whenever we have these types of events to keep our club active.
There will be plenty of food and prizes, so please sign up & come and have some fun.  You can
always contact Mike Zavesky if you have lost your application form.

Check in time is at 6AM at the boat club building. Even if you are a little late, there will be a sign
in sheet available. Fishing time is from 6:30AM to 1:30PM. Weigh in is at 2PM SHARP!
NO ACCEPTIONS!!  Entrance Fees are $10 for Members and Spouses, $20 for Non Members.
$5 for Kids under 15 years of age in the "Kids Category".  There will be special prizes for kids.

Please try to get your application turned in by June 15, 2022 or call Mike Zavesky at (708) 259-9009.

Small craft advisories go up after the start of the derby.  All boats must return to port to check out,
or be determined ineligible.

There is a Rain Date for the Perch Derby that being July 9, 2022.  All the same rules apply.

Again, let's have a good turn out for this event.

COMMODORES UPDATE: BEACH CLEAN UP THANK YOU - FREE VESSEL INSPECTION - DREDGING

TO:    ALL WRBC MEMBERS

SUBJECTS:   BEACH CLEAN UP THANK YOU - FREE VESSEL INSPECTION - DREDGING
______________________________________________________________________________

RE:    BEACH CLEAN-UP THANK YOU

I would just like to thank everybody who volunteered last Saturday, May 7th in participating in our annual WRBC Spring Beach Clean-up.  Our special thanks goes out to our WRBC Member, Steve Arnam for coordinating and running this clean-up again this year.  This was the first time that we combined WRBC Members with the City of Whiting to get a tremendous turnout.  We had about 60 volunteers who showed up from both.  This year was a little different as Steve actually weighed all the refuse collected.  We ended up with a little over 1000 lbs., which is about twice of what we collected last year.

I again, would like to thank also Nick Suarez, Whiting's City Councilman for his help in this effort. He supplied refuse bags and grabbers.  Joe Franko from the City of Whiting supplied 2 City employees with a pick-up truck to collect and properly dispose of all the waste collected.

We are going to attempt to repeat another clean-up this coming September after Whihala Beach is closed for the season.

RE:   FREE VESSEL INSPECTION SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2022 AT 10AM

Just a reminder that this Saturday, May 14, starting at 10AM, the WRBC is again going to provide a free vessel inspection for any power vessels, boats and jet skis in the Whihala Beach parking lot. As in the past, this will be conducted by the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Let's get a good turnout, as they get credit for every vessel inspected.  This is also opened to the Public and the City of Whiting/Robertsdale which has been invited. Hope to see you there Saturday.

RE:    DREDGING

Joe Franko from the City of Whiting, has completed the dredging for now.  He was able to get the harbor open to the lake, but be aware that it is only about 3 feet deep at the mouth and not wide enough for 2 boats to be entering or exiting.  I would suggest you go slow and tilt your motor up. I have asked Joe to place channel markers at the entrance.  He will finish dredging starting in September to get the channel open deeper and wider. __________________________________________________________________________________

Let's enjoy this summer as much as possible.

COMMODORES NOTES

SUBJECTS:  MARCH 29, 2022 MEETING WILL BE HELD AT BOAT CLUB BUILDING,
2022 MEMBERSHIP DUES, DREDGING WHITING PARKS MARINA,
WHITING PARKING STICKERS, FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS, AND FISHING NEWS

RE:    TUESDAY, MARCH 29, 2022 MONTHLY MEETING AT BOAT CLUB BUILDING

The March meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at 7PM at the Boat Club Building in
Whiting Parks, Whihala Beach area.  Hope to see you all there.
______________________________________________________________________________

RE:    MEMBERSHIP DUES

Just a reminder, we still have over sixty (60) WRBC Members who have not yet paid their dues for this
year 2022.  Bob Mehok has sent out notices to everyone who has not yet paid.

You can pay your dues at this month's meeting or send your payment to:  WRBC, P. O. Box 749, Whiting, IN 46394 OR to Bob Mehok, 9838 Redbud Road, Munster, IN 46327.  Once your dues are received, Bob will then mail your 2022 WRBC Membership Packet to you.  The WRBC is depended on all of our members getting their dues paid in a timely manner.  You do have until the end of April to get your membership dues paid in full.
_____________________________________________________________________________

RE:    DREDGING OF WHITING PARKS MARINA

Good news.  I was informed by the City of Whiting, that dredging of our marina will start in early April, weather permitting.  This of course is the news and hopefully everything will run smoothly and we will finally have an open channel to Lake Michigan.  The city is not going to do the entire marina, but will open it up to the lake and the city will finish dredging in the fall.

My suggestion is please be patient with the city and this project.  I will keep you informed if there are
any changes.
_____________________________________________________________________________

RE:    CITY OF WHITING PARKING STICKERS

Just a reminder:  Make sure you have your new 2022 City of Whiting Parking Sticker in place on the
lower left bottom of your windshield if you are going to park inside Whiting Park or Whihala Beach.

The Mayor of Whiting has increased the penalty fee for parking illegally to $100. If you don't have your City of Whiting Parking Sticker on your windshield and you get ticketed for this fine, it will be out of your own pocket to pay, as for the WRBC will not reimburse you.

RE:     WHITING-ROBERTSDALE FOOD PANTRY

Thank you to all who donated food and or money to the Whiting-Robertsdale Food Pantry at our
February Boat Club Meeting.  I received a nice letter from the City of Whiting thanking WRBC
for all the donations that were collected.  I will read the letter at our March meeting.  Again, I
would like to thank Boat Club Member, Morty Demkovich, as he has done in the years past,
ensuring all the donated food and monies were delivered to the Whiting-Robertsdale Food Pantry.

RE:   FISHING NEWS

Just a brief FYI, for anyone wanting to get in on an early Spring catch.  I was informed that since ice
out, they have been catching Perch in the Illinois River and Coho off shore.  Try fresh shrimp and
casting body baits and of course minnows for the Perch.

Thank you,
