COMMODORES UPDATE 5-21-2020 - RE SUBJECTS: THIS MONTHS MEETING 5-26-2020 - THE HARBOR - BOAT INSPECTION - KIDS FISHING DAY

RE:    THIS MONTHS MEETING 5-26-2020

I have decided that at this stage of the Covid-19 virus that we should be safe enough to finally hold a monthly meeting.  We will meet at the Boat Club building on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at 7PM.

Indiana has relaxed many of their regulations regarding this virus.  Please if you feel that you are not comfortable with attending the meeting in a group, feel free to stay at home.

Prior to this meeting we will wipe down all of the counters, chairs, tables, door handles, etc. with a bleach solution. We will also attempt to separate seating to comply with social distancing. I would like to thank Boat Club Members Steve Rys for donating the hand sanitizer dispenser and Mike Zavesky for the installation of the dispenser at the Boat Club building.  We now have hand sanitizer solution for everyone's use, but we will not provide masks at the meeting. If you want to bring and wear a mask, please do so.  Most importantly, if you are not feeling well, please do not attend this meeting, we still do not want to spread this virus to any of our members.

RE:    THE HARBOR

I am sure at least some of you have driven through Whiting Park and noticed changes to the harbor. A contractor was hired through the City of Whiting to remove all the damaged piers. This includes all the transient piers, the pier that was tied to the side of the main launch pier and the pier that had washed up into the rocks.  I spoke with the contractors about this removal and they informed me that they were hired to remove all of those damaged piers but to leave the main launch pier in tact.  They finished the project two days ago.  Main launch pier is still intact and usable for all of us.  From what I have been told, the City of Whiting has also ordered a pier on skids. This pier can be put in the Spring and removed in the late Fall so that this kind of damage will not reoccur.  More details to follow as I get them.

RE:    BOAT INSPECTION

I have been in contact with the Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.  We are still going to attempt to set a date probably in late August or early September for vessel inspections.  No promises for this year, but I will keep you informed.

RE:    WRBC KIDS FISHING DAY

Jim Madison who runs this event has been in contact with me about still attempting to hold the event on Saturday, September 26, 2020. The Rain Date will be Sunday, September 27, 2020 at the Hammond Marina. We definitely this year will need many more volunteers to help pull this off.  When the event gets closer, we will be asking WRBC Members to volunteer to do their part to pitch in to make this again another successful event.

Let us teach the future of fishing instilled in all these little new fishermen.

Please continue to follow recommendations in place for your health and well being according to the CDC. This includes frequent hand washing and social distancing of up to 6 feet.  I am sure you have all been attuned to all these recommendations, so lets all be safe and considerate during this pandemic. Hopefully this will end soon, as others have.

Can't wait to meet again and hope to see you all on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at 7PM.
Sincerely,

Mike Hill
